World Autism Awareness Month Highlights Need for More Inclusive Classrooms

New Delhi, India: As World Autism Awareness Month brings renewed focus to inclusive education, attention is turning to how classrooms can better support students who learn and process information differently.

A study by SMART Technologies in collaboration with the University of Melbourne highlights areas for improvement in how classrooms are designed for neurodivergent learners. The research outlines 36 evidence-based recommendations to improve both academic and social outcomes, calling for more flexible and inclusive teaching approaches.

The findings indicate that while classrooms are becoming more diverse, teaching methods often remain standardised, limiting participation for students with different learning needs. The research highlights that inclusive classrooms are most effective when they:

  • Offer multiple ways to engage, participate, and express understanding 
  • Support flexible pacing to reduce cognitive overload 
  • Enable non-verbal and visual forms of interaction 
  • Encourage structured collaboration over individual performance 
  • Create psychologically safe environments for participation 

In practice, this opens up a range of possibilities for how classrooms can be designed to be more inclusive. Providing students with multiple ways to contribute such as through text, visuals, or shared collaborative spaces, can create more psychologically safe environments for participation. Interactive elements that allow students to demonstrate understanding through actions like sorting, annotating, or manipulating content can reduce reliance on verbal or written expression alone. Flexible lesson pacing, combined with opportunities for feedback and revision, can help support focus and self-regulation, while features that enable participation from personal devices or support accessibility needs, such as text-to-speech, audio reinforcement, and readability adjustments can further reduce barriers to engagement and comprehension.

Such principles are reflected in platforms such as Lumio and SMART Board interactive displays, which are designed to support more flexible, multimodal, and inclusive classroom experiences.

“In many classrooms, there are students who quietly struggle, not because they lack ability, but because the way they learn is not always recognised. 1 in every 5 students processes information differently, yet most classrooms are still not designed to accommodate diverse learning needs. With nearly 20% of the global population identified as neurodivergent, the need for more inclusive, flexible, and student-centered learning environments has never been more urgent,” said Anshul Srivastav, Country Head, India, SMART Technologies.

“What this research highlights is that the challenge lies in how classrooms are designed. By grounding our approach in these insights, we are working toward solutions that give students multiple ways to participate and engage with learning, helping create environments that are more inclusive in practice,” he added.
